After enabling NMI in the kernel, the lockup no longer occurs. The value of
nmi_watchdog on the command line does not appear to matter (I tried absent, =1, 
=2)

However, the hardware clock is still being corrupted, and I can tell other
things are being overwritten - the console resolution changes after a resume
(expanded to full-screen instead of in a high-resolution box).

The config has added:
CONFIG_X86_UP_IOAPIC=y
CONFIG_X86_IO_APIC=y
# CONFIG_PCI_MSI is not set
