No, nothing in the kernel or in the hardware does that automatically.

That does make it come back.

Yes, my DSDT hack was the first step, then I discovered the above, then I tried
to automate this inside the kernel:

this approach work as long as you don't open/close/reopen the lid too fast, so
it needs a little more work.
