I'm not sure, but I think that the sd module is inside the initrd image. While
running mkinitrd, there is a module called "sd_mod" which is included. I have
not added any lines to INITRD_MODULES, assuming that this "sd_mod" is the sd
module.

Well, according to Thomas (comment #28):

But after the changes in comment #19, my computer was able to boot.

Summming up: I can boot the old kernel (2.6.22.5-31) but I cannot install new
ones. 2.6.24-rc6 remains unbootable.
