I was confused by the fact that there are quite a few variations of the A8N, with different BIOS releases - I suspect this may be why Robert didn't see the bug - different A8N variation. I think the general theory is still right though - that there is a BIOS bug, and that some vendors/ BIOSs have fixed it.
