I had the same problem - I don't know since when it does not occur anymore, but I just did a test with bios version 209Ae (I won't downgrade for a test!), kernel 2.6.25.1 (with radeon framebuffer console), radeon xorg drivers (git version) and can not reproduce it anymore. The hanging behavour could be observerd running an older kernel and an older bios.
