I will use actual_brightness from now on.

No, it does not.  There are absolutely no brightness changes under any
circumstance when video.ko is not loaded.

The hotkeys change the physical brightness, but the files remain unchanged.  I
have just used the keys to reduce the brightness to a very low level, but
/proc.. still says 100%.
