you don't have "/proc/acpi/event" file?
that's bad, please make sure both CONFIG_ACPI_PROCFS and CONFIG_ACPI_PROC_EVENT
are set in your kernel config file.

please do the following test:
1. set CONFIG_ASUS_LAPTOP and rebuild your kernel
2. boot with "acpi_backlight=vendor"
can you change the backlight using the /sys/class/backlight I/F?
does the hotkey work this time?
