Oups .. eeepc-laptop generate X events for backlight, asus-laptop don't.

So no brightness blinking ? Then it might be a bug in the acpi/video.ko module.

Echo'ing values to /sys/class/backlight/asus_laptop/brightness makes no
changes, but did you try reading brightness and actual_brightness after echoing
?
Could you try that ? (with values from 1 to 15)
