I recently came across a different solution to the LCD brightness issue on the
Acer Aspire 5740.  It also applies to other laptops using i915 DRM.

First, compile a kernel (I used 2.6.36-rc8) patched with Matthew Garrett's
native backlight control patch:

Next, add acpi_backlight=vendor to the GRUB kernel line and remove
acpi_osi="Linux".

This enables backlight control with more levels of adjustment than the previous
method.  It also allows the gnome brightness applet and power manager to
control backlight brightness, neither of which worked before.
