I did this by adding i915.modeset=0 single to the kernel command line<<EOF echo shutdown >/sys/power/disk echo disk >/sys/power/state pm-hibernate EOF The system hibernated ok but when I rebooted it finished reading the hibernate image and did a hard power off.
