Ok first thing then is to work out if its a platform problem or a driver thing
and if so which drivers.

You should be able to boot the machine with the boot option init=/bin/sh and
get nothing running but an initial shell, then type poweroff -f at the command
line to power the machine back off.

(you may need to ask the Ubuntu forums how to do this as I'm not that familiar
with Ubuntu specific bits)

If that fails then it may be tricky, if that works then it implies one of the
other drivers is getting stuck - and that is something that can be hunted down
methodically.
