Bug ID: 220277 Summary: No audio after kernel update; only BIOS rewrite fixes it (MSI Stealth 17M A12UE) Product: ACPI Version: 2.5 Hardware: All OS: Linux Status: NEW Severity: normal Priority: P3 Component: Config-Tables Assignee: acpi_config-tab...@kernel-bugs.osdl.org Reporter: ilkerkara...@gmail.com Regression: No Created attachment 308317 --> https://bugzilla.kernel.org/attachment.cgi?id=308317&action=edit Sound card not working after kernel update, fixed only by BIOS rewrite (MSI Stealth 17M A12UE) # Sound device failure after kernel updates on MSI Stealth 17M A12UE Hi kernel team, This bug report has been prepared on behalf of a user who does not speak English, with my assistance (ChatGPT). I’m helping him report a serious, reproducible issue on his MSI Stealth 17M A12UE notebook. After multiple Linux kernel updates (across 2023 and 2024), the onboard audio device becomes **completely unresponsive**—no audio output/input devices appear, and ALSA tools report no usable audio hardware. The issue **can only be resolved by rewriting the BIOS**. The user has performed this process more than **15–20 times**, which has ultimately led to a critical BIOS write failure that required physical repair via service. No signs of sound device recovery are seen even when downgrading the kernel alone; BIOS rewrite remains the only working fix. ## Additional info: - System: MSI Stealth 17M A12UE, Intel Core i7-1280P, UEFI BIOS `E17R1IMS.10F` (2024-01-17) - OS: Garuda Linux (Arch-based) - Boot Mode: UEFI (fwupdmgr reports "ESP not configured", which may block some updates) - `fwupd`, `dmesg`, `dmidecode`, `alsa`, and `aplay` outputs are attached ## Reproducibility: - Occurs after every major kernel update - BIOS reset/restore fixes the issue temporarily, but any new kernel re-triggers the audio failure - The problem *does not* seem related to UEFI secure boot, as it's disabled ## Clarification: In 2024, **some** kernel versions also triggered boot-time freezes and Caps Lock LED blinking (suggesting kernel panics), **but those symptoms are no longer present**. Only the sound failure persists today. ## Attachment Summary: - `dmidecode_output.txt`: BIOS/system info - `fwupd_output.txt`: Firmware/UEFI device status - `alsa_info.txt`, `aplay_output.txt`: Audio device status (none visible) - `dmesg_output.txt`: Boot logs - `acpidump.dat`: ACPI data ## Suggested Commands for Developers (if needed): The user is ready to provide output from commands such as: - `journalctl -b | grep -iE 'snd|hda|audio'` - `lspci -nnk | grep -iA3 audio` - `cat /proc/asound/cards` - `lsmod | grep snd` - or any custom kernel debugging flags. ## Goal: Please help identify **why Linux kernel updates consistently break sound** on this specific laptop and whether kernel patches or quirks are required. The system is running in UEFI mode. If ACPI or UEFI is related to the issue, the user is willing to provide more dumps or diagnostics. -- You may reply to this email to add a comment.
