OK, I solved my own problem (that seems to be the case 50% of the time, just
posting to this groups seems to awaken certain brain cells that tell me
where to look)

There is a corrupted record in the .dbf file.  If I get the file open while
linked in Access, delete the bad record, then close it, I can then query the
.dbf file directly.  Only problem is, I'm working with a local copy, and
every time I copy over an updated version, it still has the bad record in
it.  I'm going to try to get the other system to correct the bad record on
the original so I can automate the process a little more.
