WHAT A BRS FILE IS ------------------------------------------------- News articles from AEGIS are sent in BRS format. BRS stands for Bibliographic Research Service, the organization that developed the file format. The BRS format tries to make information easily accessible to both humans and computer programs. A BRS file is regular enough to be "read" by compute programs for automatic processing (e.g., indexing), but it is close enough to regular English to be readable by humans. A BRS file is a plain text (ASCII) file that is composed of several blocks of text. A block is designated by a two to four character token beginning in column two of a line of text. Here is an excerpt from a BRS file-- Document 0001 DOCN LT960201 TI (LT) AIDS Researchers Savor Gains in War Against Virus Medicine: New drugs, better tests are cause for cautious, but unparalleled, optimism among specialists. Other lines can have a block token beginning in the second column. If the line begins with six or more characters, it is considered a continuation line.
