I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that we have used ipfw to redirect port 80 to 8080 on the 4D/A4D server.
That could be it, because if you don't specify the host:port, the browser takes it from the HTTP headers, which would be myhost:8080 in this case.
I recommend you use a packet capturing tool or a header capturing tool in FireFox to see what the HTTP headers are in the redirect request.
