We've not used ePDQ, but a similar system (SagePay - used to be Protx) which 
encrypts the data and sends it via POST.
As per Brad Perkins' reply we also use a set of 4D methods to do this (using 
the Internet Commands plug-in), which Active 4D then calls from the web pages.
Works pretty well.
