Can't help you with the backup part, but it seems to be pretty standard 
procedures anymore to put a REAL web server in front of 4D and run 4D server on 
a high port  number. Apache or nginx takes the port 80 stuff and proxy passes 
to 4D. There are several posts in the archives, and I think Wiki, on how to do 
that.

I seem to remember trying to run as root years ago and gave up. You apparently 
got yours right, but forgot how it worked. I don't think I ever did that :-), 
well maybe only a couple hundred times.
