What can I do to put this right again?
Can't help you with the backup part, but it seems to be pretty standard procedures anymore to put a REAL web server in front of 4D and run 4D server on a high port number. Apache or nginx takes the port 80 stuff and proxy passes to 4D. There are several posts in the archives, and I think Wiki, on how to do that. I seem to remember trying to run as root years ago and gave up. You apparently got yours right, but forgot how it worked. I don't think I ever did that :-), well maybe only a couple hundred times.
