You are probably thinking that a relative path is relative to the web root, but the web root is not the default directory. If you look at page 40 you'll see what the default directory is. The 'default directory' command will also show you what it is. This behavior was used because it is consistent with 4D. That's why only full paths *seem* to be working for you. If you want a web root relative path, the easiest way to do so is always to use 'join paths(get root; $rootRelativePath)'.
