Solved.

I've forgotten how to make an assignment in 4D. Bad habits ingrained from
using too many other languages.

I only discovered this when I replaced those session{} assignments with
set session(... ; ...) and it began working.

Would using TextMate and the A4D TextMate bundle have made that more
apparent?
