David,

I'm actually working on the same task and was about to ask for "best
practices" to do multi-language web sites as well.

In my case it is a kind of web catalog/ shopping application and all product
related content is already in multiple languages within the 4D database.

So it is mainly the static text, labels and headlines, I have to localize.

At first, I thought about duplicating the whole website, making a localized
version for each language. Using virtual-hosts, I'd target the user to the
appropriate site automatically, still allowing them to switch language
manually later on.

As the website is and likely will be work in progress for some time, that
approach would require me to make all future changes on all localized mirror
websites as well, what is not very efficient.

So now I'm planning to use a 4D table "localized_text", where I (or someone
speaking the foreign language) can add phrases in different languages. On
application start, I'll load the whole table in a global collection. Then
I'd replace all static text, aka. "Invoice" with <%=invoice["de"]%>,
<%=invoice["fr"]%> etc.

Seems to be a good compromise between freedom to add new languages, while
preventing me to maintain several localized mirror sites.

Would like to hear, what workflow others are using to do multi-language web
sites.

Peter
