Jason,

I don't think you can run 4D Client (now called 4D Remote) as a "true"
service, but there are ways to ensure that it is always running.
Our setup is Apache and 4D Remote running on the same MacOS box. 4D Server
is on a Windows Server.
I use MacOS' launchd system to ensure 4D Remote is always running. If it
isn't, a shell script fires that opens a .4Dlink file that logs 4D remote
in as the "web server" user. Our DB also supports a few desktop 4D Remote
users so I run a different startup method for the "web server".

If your client is Windows ask on the Nug about utilities to keep Windows
"clients" always running. I know the topic has come up, but I've never
needed to do that and don't recall the details. The one utility I recall
can be found here: http://www.algonet.se/~blomster/tools.html but it is
somewhat dated (last tested with 4D 2003).
