Are you trying to change the group membership from Outlook?

If so, you may be hitting a bug, er, um, I mean feature of Active
Directory/Outlook integration. What happens is that Outlook is trying to
change the list membership via whatever GC it is talking to. Problem is that
GCs have read-only[1] versions of groups from other domains and thus can't
update the list (group) membership.

Can you add the users to the group using ADUC?

[1] Not quite true, but close enough for this discussion.

Subject: [ActiveDir] Groups in a domain tree

I have a parent domain and a child domain both in native mode. I have
Universal Distribution lists in the parent that contain all my users for
distribution lists in exchange. I cannot seem to add users from the child
into the group in the parent. Does anyone have any ideas? The error
message says, "Cannot find user, if the user is located on another domain
controller in the enterprise it could take up to 15 minutes for the user to
appear".
