These are questions that you can start to find answers to with network tracing and one of the reasons I like pushing people to do it. You learn a ton and when you know how it works, troubleshooting gets a trifle easier.
So anyway, both of these are an answer of the proper info from the forest is queried through a global catalog found via DNS lookup. Entire network in that context really means domain stuff in the forest.
