Hi Eric

You can get client site information from nltest.exe:

C:\>nltest  /DSGETSITE
other
The command completed successfully

You could call DsGetSiteName() directly as well.

You can also parse the registry entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Parameters "DynamicSiteName"

and based on your goals - you may want to tear apart this project and see if you can use any of it - http://www.winnetmag.com/WindowsScripting/Article/ArticleID/24368/24368.html'

Hope it helps!

Subject: [ActiveDir] Large-scale Location Tracking

Lookin' for advice...

I've been looking more into location tracking, and it seems intriguing.  However how practical is it to keep physical track of all computers and printers...and keep the updates of the locations correct when the respective objects are moved.  Also, how does this play into mobile users?

I originally wanted to user location tracking in combination with VBScripts to auto-map user printers based on where they log into [that day].  However, the location tracking information is not dynamic.  Although 'site awareness' exists, it appears to be rather difficult to get dynamically via script.  Consequently, if it were easy to get this information via script, then that capability of automation would allow for so much more...

Is anyone "really" using 'Location Tracking'?  Our environment is: 13,000 global users, 700 servers, and "more printers than you can shake a stick at"...

Good advice is always appreciated.

Thanks,
