Hi,

That's true if you first setup ADC to replicate all mailboxes and
distribution lists to AD. The object that are created by the ADC are
disabled user accounts that have rights to the mailboxes on Exchange 5.5 and
universal distribution groups if the Exchange DLs are NOT USED for assiging
permissions. If a DL in Exchange 5.5 is used to assign permissions then it
will be migrated as a universal security group. Universal distribution
groups can exist in all W2Kx modes/DFLs and universal security groups can
only exist in at least Windows 2000 Native mode/dfl.
If you then migrate the NT4 user accounts to AD, NEW user objects will be
created. For this you need to merge the accounts with an exchange merging
wizard.

TIP: don't enable the "disabled user account" created by the ADC as it will
automatically loose access to its corresponding mailbox. I have read
somewhere that the msExchMasterAccountsid attribute (that stores the sid of
the NT4 user account that has rights to the mailbox) is reset.

If you first migrate the users with, lets say ADMT (or some other third
party migration tooling), and then setup the ADC, the ADC will match each
mailbox to the corresponding migrated user account in AD, The latter is also
only true IF each NT4 account ONLY has ONE mailbox assigned. If a NT4 user
has more than 1 mailbox (1 user mailbox and several resource mailboxes) than
you need to determine the primary user mailbox through the NTDSnomatch
utility. If you don't do this (determining the primary mailbox) the matching
results could vary.
If I remember correctly the E2K ADC matches the mailboxes and the AD
accounts through the ALIAS and the E2K3 matches the mailboxes and the AD
accounts through the objectSID.

Regards,
Jorge

You need to run adclean to merge the mailbox with the user object after
ADMT is run.

Hi,

NT4 only has a FULL NAME field and does not have a FIRST NAME and LAST
NAME field. So when you migrate user objects to AD only the FULL NAME
FIELD and the DISPLAY NAME field is migrated (the display name, used for
the GAL, by default depends on the full name). If you have Exchange 5.5
running AND the FIRST FIELD and LAST NAME field is populated in Exchange
AND you use the ADC to connect Exchange 5.5 to AD THEN the FIRST NAME
field and the LAST NAME field in AD will be populated by the values in
Exchange (incl. the display
name)

Regards,
Jorge

I looked at that. IIRC we couldn't afford it.
