If the 2k3 is running the firewall service.. it won't replicate. Make sure you've shut that off. I've easily replicated to a 2k3 box when doing a swing migration from one SBS2k3 to another.

This isn't an issue of SBS.. this is how the network was set up .

(I have a really bad attitude when it comes to SBS .. so I'm really sorry..just everyone duck okay?)

The stability issue you see is not caused by SBS.. but rather whomever set up this network. I have been using SBS in my firm since SBS 4.0.. I chose SBS.. I would not move away from SBS as the foundation for my now multi server network. It absolutely runs circles around 'normal' server when it comes to RWW and the monitoring email.. but if someone doesn't take the time to do it right.. it invaribly is blamed for "lack of stability".

SBS isn't your problem. It's whomever didn't take the time to do his or her homework. The resources and community is out here and loves to help and it pains us to see a SBS network set up incorrectly.

SBS when left to it's own wizardized devices to set up DNS can't be screwed up... when it is.. it's because someone thought they knew the 'big server way' to do this. Let it do it's thing and set up it's own stuff via the set up wizards.

RWW kicks as...sets in a small firm.

I can't even imagine any firm not using Exchange.. if only for the group calendaring function.

Well, I did try to make the 2k3 a DC, but I keep having issues with doing
a Replication (RPC server unavailable) to the SBS2k3 server. I demoted it
back down again (forced). The SBS2k3 server was not setup well (as with
everything else here). I need to bring some stability to this whole thing
and moving away from SBS I believe would help - especially finding out how
the rest of the network is setup. There are some other major issues, but
again, I think moving away from SBS would solve a whole lot of issues
(i.e. when I ping the domain name, the IP resolves to the Win2k DC and not
the SBS2k3 - Yes, I believe the DNS is screwed up too).

We don't use any of the features of SBS (Exchange, FAX, SQL), so I can't
fathom why this server was done this way. Thanks for the website, but
being non-profit, and with this group, I shouldn't have to spend a lot (if
anything).

Blasphemy.. :-) Rid of the SBS 2k3 box? Horrors. And bring the 2k back in as a GC? I'd make the 2k3 the DC.. more secure.

Why not the SBS transition pack? This breaks the technical limitations of SBS so you are 'normal 'server, but keeps the RWW and monitoring email stuff.. but lets you do trusts and stuff.

www.sbsmigration.com is our guru of FMSO role seizing. I can ping you up with Jeff who will be giving a talk about disaster recovery of SBS at TechEd 2006 in Boston if you like?

I have a small network with a SBS2003 server, a Win2k Server that is a
DC,
and a 2k3 server that is a member server in our network. I want to get
rid of the SBS2k3 server. I hear that all that I have to do is take the
win2k server off the network, seize the FSMO roles, then take the SBS
server down and bring the 2k server back online as the GC. Anyone done
this with success and have a little better road map to do this?
Thank you!
