At first stab, yes and no... Yes - if the different subnets use DHCP/DNS/WINS servers that do not talk to each other. No if the subnets "talk" to each other.
On the same subnet, if you use DHCP, it doesn't matter if the machine is in a Workgroup or a Domain, you will get a duplicate machine name on the network (no good). If different subnets, if separate DHCP servers update a single DNS, or if on different subnets your machines point to the same DNS server, you will get duplicate DNS names with different IP addresses (also no good). Just some quick thoughts, not well thought out yet.
