Ok folks,
I even tried the basic invocation:
BrokerService broker = new BrokerService();
Broker.addConnector("tcp://localhost:9998");
broker.start();
Even this hangs under linux!!!

I have left it in this state for about 2 hrs. Its still hung. There is
no CPU activity.

Which version are you using? There was a bug a few months ago that
addConnector() would sometimes try start the broker's persistence
engine which would cause a full recovery to start.
