OK, my mistake for not stating all. I ran it in a tcsh window rather than a cmd window. When I try it in a cmd window, I get the same results as you described. I'm so used to using tcsh rather than cmd, it didn't even register that I wasn't reproducing the scenario exactly. So it looks like there is a problem somewhere - maybe there's a workaround, but I don't know.
