You guys are complicating it - awful can be used to just mean an intensifier -
like 'amazing', etc.

      adv : used as intensifiers; "terribly interesting"; "I'm awful
            sorry" [syn: {terribly}, {awfully}, {frightfully}]

Just substitute 'awful lot' => 'a whole bunch'.
