Thanks, Jan -- that showed me that the error is Win32::OLE(0.1709) error 0x80070005: "Access is denied" Now I just have to figure out what permission is needed.

It returns a reference to this object or undef if the creation failed." undef is not particularly useful. Is there any way to get further information on why the object could not be created?
