[Joel] There is supposed to be an open source debate between an advocate at Redhat and one of Microsoft's people. Can't remember the names off hand but do you know of it? When I heard about it, I thought it would be real interesting to see. Any chance of a transcript being available that you know of? [Don] Here's info from Wininfo Update 7-24 * MICROSOFT EXEC TO DEBATE OPEN SOURCE Microsoft executive Craig Mundie will step out of the frying pan and into the fire later this week when he takes the stage at the O'Reilly Open Source Convention in San Diego to debate open source with the movement's strongest supporters. The highly anticipated showdown will pit Mundie against Red Hat Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Michael Tiemann, with Mundie espousing the virtues of Microsoft's Shared Source program over open source. Mundie first entered the open source crosshairs in early May when he launched a bizarre attack on open source software (OSS), signaling that Microsoft considers open source projects such as Linux to be serious competition to Windows. "The OSS development model leads to a strong possibility of unhealthy 'forking' of a code base, resulting in the development of multiple incompatible versions of programs, weakened interoperability, product instability, and hindering businesses' ability to strategically plan for the future," Mundie said at the time. "Furthermore, it has inherent security risks and can force intellectual property into the public domain. As history has shown, this type of model isn't successful in building a mass market and making powerful, easy-to-use software broadly accessible to consumers." Mundie's attack launched a weeks-long string of responses from the open source community, culminating in comments by Linux creator Linus Torvalds and, eventually, an invitation for Mundie to appear at the Open Source Convention. I assume that Mundie's reception from conference attendees will be fairly unfriendly. _______________________________________________ ActivePython mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://listserv.ActiveState.com/mailman/listinfo/activepython
