Why don't you try posting this to the comp.lang.python newsgroup?
There's a huge number of very talented python programmers there; 
they _will_ take it apart, and tell you exactly what is happening, and
what the best way to get performance is.

If you don't normally read usenet news, you can go to
groups.google.com, look up the newsgroup, and post and read from
there.
