Er, do you mean ActivePython 2.4.3.12? I don't have any experience with using _winreg on remote machines and don't have the ability to test that here. Are you sure that the Access denied error is because of the file name and not because of a lack of SeBackupPriviledge as is mentioned as being required in the docs?
