I just bought Learning Rails, which is very up to date - rails 2.1-2.2 anyway. And it has some very good explanations I didn't get elsewhere.
Unfortunately, I'm accumulating a decent stack of books, and still just in the basics. The Rails Way is supposed to be a little more advanced, but I got a lot of basics from it. Having the Ruby Pocket Reference handy has been a blessing. I just got the Rails Pocket Reference; but I'm toting around Learning Rails and not usinfg the pocket guide yet so much. I started with Agile Web Dev; it helped me write a first program, but for me I didn't understand enough Ruby and I think I ended up being more confused than I should have. Oh. If you haven't, go through WhyTheLuckyStiff's interactive "Try Ruby Online" tutorial. Its great.
