In conjunction with her exhibition Myth and Practice Sriwhana Spong presents the film screening I Free Myself for Today and Forever.

I Free Myself for Today and Forever features films by Stella Corkery, Nova Paul, Amy Granat and Emily Sundblad.

"The agency of the mobile camera, with its ability to capture the private and subjective is visited in these works. The everyday is common to all, yet in focusing on that which is close, it becomes a stranger. The everyday slips away, and what is left is the magic, or the shadows of that which is familiar and near at hand. For each artist the means of production, and the agency implicit in the mobility of the medium, helps to create the distinct visions offered in these works."

Stella Corkery is an Auckland based visual artists and musician. In Holiday 93 the banal and the surreal rub shoulders. The sun bounces off water, people meander along the beach, someone swings an axe in a moment of acted out frenzy. The soundtrack was created by attaching a Light Sensitive Theremin to the computer screen to translate image into sound.

Amy Granat (USA) and Emily Sundblad (Swe) have been collaboratively producing 16mm films for the past year and a half. The films of the two often feature both women performing simple, repetitive actions in outdoor settings, exchanging the wind-up 16mm camera to take turns shooting. Both film makers are currently based in New York and have exhibited extensively in the United States and Europe.

Nova Paul is a filmmaker of Te Uri Ro Roi and Te Parawhau /Ngā Puhi descent. Paul’s work has been included in several major local exhibitions and solo shows She is currently a senior lecturer at AUT, teaching art theory and moving image in the Spatial, Visual Arts and Postgraduate Departments. She is also co-editing a book titled PLACE: Local Knowledge and New Media Practice.
