Meshes of the Afternoon is one of the most influential works in American experimental cinema. A non-narrative work, it has been identified as a key example of the "trance film," in which a protagonist appears in a dreamlike state, and where the camera conveys his or her subjective focus. Artists Sriwhana Spong and Vivian Lynn will use Deren’s film as a springboard to consider the sources and procedures of their own practices which likewise seek to develop a visual language and forms specific to their experiences. This events marks the conclusion of Sriwhana Spong's Film Archive exhibition Myth and Practise and the continuing Adam Art Gallery survey of Vivian Lynn's career entitled I, Here, Now.

The Rainbow Reels
Earlier this year artist Tessa Laird was asked to curate a summer exhibition responding to material from the Archive's collections. Given such a vast resource she decided to impose a (rather arbitrary) guiding theme, choosing the seven official colours of the rainbow - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo or violet. In The Rainbow Reels some of the connections are obvious (eg: summer flowers) while others are more obscure – the black and white footage of Mao Tse Tung comes from a 1957 Hayward Films documentary Inside Red China.

The opening of The Rainbow Reels will also feature live music from The Alphabet Bomber, a rock 'n roll duo consisting of brothers Arlo and Tom Heynes who between them have an average age of of 13, and a songbook inspired by The Ramones and The Cramps! Come along to celebrate The Rainbow Reels and the holiday season.
