Hi,

There are to be three Education for sustainability projects at SCANZ 2009.
These are also known as 60 Springs projects; both are an initiative of Puke
Ariki integrated library museum in association with Shell.

To date, 60 Springs projects have included two school groups conducting
experiments in Pukekura Park, using data loggers, mainly with a science
focus.

The SCANZ 60 Springs projects are aimed at engaging youth with creativity in
the environment where this is mediated by technology. Three SCANZ projects
fall under the 60 Springs banner.

Nina Czegledy's project 'What will you do' asks participants directly to
consider the environment and make a pledge or statement of what they will do
to counter degradation in the environment. This statement can then be sent
via text to a website, where the responses are displayed.

Brett Stalbaum's 'Pukekura Park Demonstration/Environment and Sustainability
Tours' utilises open source software, GPS and mobile phones to create GPS
guided tours of Pukekura Park, the local botanic garden and the focus of 60
Springs (there are 60 Springs in Pukekura Park).

Andrew Paterson's project 'Taranaki Platform Ecologies' responds to and sets
out to nourish, the online platforms surrounding Puke Ariki by exploring,
documenting and bridging online/offline aspects of the former wiki and soon
to be kete. Online kete were developed by the Horowhenua Library, and the
format has been adopted by Puke Ariki to form the basis for a public pool of
knowledge around Pukekura Park.

Last year, local high schoolteachers were asked to put forward the names of
their laterally thinking students and of the list provided, seven have
indicated an interest in participating. The high school students, some of
whom are off to first year uni, come from a range of disciplines, not just
visual arts. Some students from the BVA at WITT are also involved.

These projects will be reported on at the symposium. Online registrations
are now open at http://intercreate.org/view/symposium13
