No fun either side of the Tasman: here in the merry old land of Oz, the senator for censorship, S Conroy, is proposing a blacklist to be applied by ISPs. Most of the sites are by al accounts pretty repulsive (and I speak as someone generally speaking in favour of censorship -- I just think we should do the censoring, not "them"). The domains are offputting in themselves. The problem is that when Wikileaks leaked the blacklist, they were added to it (allegedly - Conroy is claiming in the Age newspaper that he's done no such thing - which he wouldn't, because he doesn't author the list, ASCMA [Aus Comms and media Authority] do.
The story is at http://www.wikileaks.org/wiki/Australian_government_secret_ACMA_internet_cen sorship_blacklist%2C_6_Aug_2008 Between content censorship (technically difficult) and piracy policing (clearly politically and legally very tricky at best), we may well end up with the kinds of system we really don't need Is anyone on the list looking at IPv6: before he retired/passed away, jack Valenti was leading the charge for the MPAA to incorporate DRM in the root code . . . sean On 20/03/09 1:20 PM, "Luke Munn" <[email protected]> wrote: > Hey ADAers, > > Hadn't seen this posted here so thought I'd share story from Ars > Technica posted last week.... > > "Under government pressure, copyright holders and ISPs in New Zealand > have been meeting for months to hash out a Code of Conduct for > disconnecting repeat Internet "pirates."
