Hi,
I am interested in sci-fi aesthetics too, but in a more old-school
way. Sometimes, when mainstream film-makers have been attempting to
visually represent the spooky, alien and unknowable, they have turned
to abstract film-makers. So you get someone like Jordan Belson
(http://dataisnature.com/?p=150
) making the astronauts' re-entry sequence in The Right Stuff, or the
demon seed in the film of the same name. Or you could think of
Douglas Trumbull's work on the star-gate sequence in 2001. Part of my
practice has been to rescue these snippets and turn them back into
arty abstract films.

I think too of the use of composer Ligeti's
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gy%C3%B6rgy_Ligeti
) spooky music in 2001, another avant-garde ring-in. There are some
really interesting books on architecture and cinema, which might be
worth chasing up. For some reason, I'm also reminded of Australian
artist Callum Morton, particularly Babylonia
(http://www.roslynoxley9.com.au/artists/27/Callum_Morton/483/
) - a giant polystyrene meteorite that, on walking inside, reveals a
half scale model of a hotel corridor (think The Shining), with sounds
emanating from behind the closed doors. Very strange and cinematic.

best,
Stella
