Hi,

At this years ADA symposium the intention is to hold a Leonardo Education Forum
(LEF). This is a forum where issues in digital media practice as these impact
education are discussed. Following the setting up of an Aotearoa New Zealand
LEF at SCANZ in February, we have the opportunity to be networked world wide
with educators who are examining some of the same issues. In particular we need
to discuss:

1. What are the issues given our Aotearoa New Zealand context?

2. What form should the LEF here take? Should it be a free open discussion
network; or be guided by a group of people who form some sort committee or
steering group, and who seek contributions from all; or should it have a more
formal constitution?

It seems that the international LEF network prefers to work with one contact
person and they have asked me and I have accepted. So this bit remains but all
other parts are open to question and debate. As it happens I am unable to
attend on the Friday of the ADA conference and have full confidence those who
attend will talk things through. Su Ballard and Trudy Lane are co-chairs of the
workshop session.

I personally have no particular agendas except that I would like to see some
form of acknowledgment of our location in the South Pacific embedded in
discussion. In Belfast and Melbourne later this year I will report to the
international LEF on the outcome of this discussion, and ask those at ADA
ensure good notes are taken. It may be that the discussion points are
identified and the discussion continues online.

One of the benefits of the international network is the resources available,
and the following links from Paul Thomas in Australia http://www.nomad.net.au
and http://mass.nomad.net.au are to a media art scoping study tracking the
evolution of curriculum in media art in Australia, FYI.

What is LEF in Aotearoa?
About what is LEF in Aotearoa, this is not a silly question, but it is one
without an answer currently. It can only be answered by the discussion that
occurs at ADA, and it may take some time after that to answer it exactly. I
suppose a working notion is that it is a collection of people interested in
academic issues where these intersect electronic media practice, and luckily
rather than starting a group all of our own, it is connected to a world wide
network of people with similar interests. That's a mouthful, hopefully we can
improve on it over time.

Subject: [Ada_list] ADA Symposium: June 26 - 28th, Wellington

Dear ADA

This year's symposium takes place June 26 - 28 at the Victoria
University School of Design, Wellington.

There will be keynote presentation by Phil Dadson, a remote
conversation with London-based media theorist Matthew Fuller, lots of
short presentations on many different things, a series of curated
'conversations' on a range of topics, workshops, a screening +
performance evening, an exhibition, soccer, lunches, and more...

Details, programme, etc are, finally, here:
http://symposium09.aotearoadigitalarts.org.nz/

The programme will get filled in with the specifics of speakers closer
to the time, so keep an eye on it for more.

There is also a Facebook event here (which has the same information on
it as the website, just on facebook...):
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=101592109752

Looking forward to seeing lots of you there!

Zita
