"Radia is a network of independent radio stations who have a common
interest in promoting and producing artworks for the radio, and in
forming related projects based on broadcasting and cultural exchange.
We produce a weekly radio show that is broadcast by each of the member
radio stations. Our shows represent the local artistic community of
each station, whilst at the same time these new works point to an
emergent collective notion of self-determined art for radio..."

New Zealand's first contribution to the Radia project, a peer-to-peer
network of globally distributed art radio stations, is a documentary
on long running Dunedin based experimental music festival Lines of
Flight.

It was produced by Gilbert May with research and development
assistance from Sally Ann McIntyre, and goes live to air around the
network this week, being broadcast as Radia show #231 to a group of
stations which includes Radio Orange (Vienna), Resonance FM (London),
free103point9 (New York State) and Radio Grenouille (Marseille). The
documentary will be broadcast this Sunday on the NZ Radia member
station Radio One in Dunedin, from 9 - 9:30pm.

to celebrate this event in a localised, yet distributed manner
(appropriate when considering the Lines of Flight festival, with its
catalysing of community via its status as an important localised
gathering point for sound makers from all over New Zealand), art
project space Enjoy Gallery will also host a mini FM simulcast of the
transmission in Wellington, narrowcast to the gallery by the mobile
experimental radio station / transmission art project RADIO CEGESTE,
as it goes to air on Dunedin's radio waves.

Radia shows may be distributed by online file sharing but it is not
internet radio – underlining the potential for radio to be reconceived
as a live, localised and performative artform, as well as examining
its distributive potential, and looking forward to future invited
contributions to the Radia project by New Zealand sound makers, the
opportunity to place Radia’s transmission art within the context of
an artist run initiative is also an opportunity to extend a localized
discussion about radio as an art medium, and look toward a New Zealand
manifestation of Radia’s treatment of the airwaves as a form of
artist-run space.

there will be performances by convivial aural alchemists before and
after the Radia transmission, including Aro Valley's HAULOUT SEAL
ORCHESTA Central Wellington's DISCOMEDUSAE and Chc-Auckland mystery
'supergroup' duo ., (dot comma)

there will be a limited amount of radio receivers available, but
audiences are encouraged to bring an FM radio or a FM-enabled
cellphone to the event to tune in. the signal will be transmitted to
an area of approx 150 meters from the epicentre of Enjoy Gallery to
the wider environs of Cuba Street. Audience-roaming within the
signal's radius is welcomed.

if you're somewhere other than Wellington and would like to listen in,
the Radia transmission of the documentary, hosted by Gilbert May, will
be streamed live on Radio One's website in the station's Radia slot
between 9 - 9:30 (see links below).

RADIO CEGESTE

is a transmission art project by sally ann mcintyre. a sporadic,
nomadic radio show without an umbrella station or regular programming,
radio cegeste manifests as an ongoing series of experiments in
site-specific radiophonic locality, within whose open framework
micro-radio stations are created as bounded events for particular
spaces via the broadcast source of a very simple handmade, low powered
Mini-FM transmitter, in conjunction with an array of radio receivers.

DISCOMEDUSAE

is a wellington based duo whose prior manifestations of live sound
have included near-inaudible bass sonifications, and a live score for
scrolling code-concrete (the Library of Babel) for the Aotearoa
Digital Arts Festival 2009. they describe their process as ‘chance
fragments of culture manipulated into the orderings of the obsessive
compulsive’… for Sunday’s performance they’ll be channeling the ether
via various instrumental ‘aerials’, manipulations they perceive as
‘not so much 'radioart', as ‘radio as material’.

HAULOUT SEAL ORCHESTRA

is the solitary sound project of Wellington filmmaker Campbell Walker.
"Seals may appear to be injured or depressed but in fact are usually
just tired or lazy" is a new work combining sound collage with
performance. he says “In it the depressed and isolated artist
obsessively reworks his past glories, stripping them of any original
meaning or context in the search for memories of satisfying human
contact, and recasting them into fragments of narcissistic
self-mythologising.”
