HOWEVER in the last digest someone mentioned the word "school" and that changed my perspective a bit - I think it may be a roving school library bus we're talking about here! taking digital arts to teenagers, and showing them there's more to computer networking than gaming, facebook and youtube. which I'm not sure any of us are that keen on doing (then again, there's been a lot of enthusiasm about the road trip aspect - any way to get out of these deadlines!), but that certainly would be an approach to get good funding. even if it is officially an educational focus, it'd be easy to tack on the mobile hacklab for the eager twentysomethings. (although it'd probably help to promote them entirely separately, I mean, who wants to be associated with school kids! sheesh!) ok better run, jo ------------------------------ Message: 2 Date: Wed, 7 Oct 2009 15:25:05 +1100 From: "Kath O'Donnell" <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [Ada_list] Another submission we could make: CNZ strategic plan To: trudy lane <[email protected]> Cc: Aotearoa Digital Arts <[email protected]> Message-ID: <[email protected]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" (sorry, resending as I think my previous attempt failed due to me changing emails. have updated subscription to the new address so hopefully this works this time) hi Trudy, jumping in when I saw sarai mentioned. I've been to Sarai for the 2006 iFellows presentations (& am on some of their mail lists) when I was living in delhi in 2006, but I'm not involved with their operation. the following is my understanding of the projects, but perhaps someone else might have more details/corrections. (or I could ask on reader-l if you like/want to know more?) most of their projects are available on the website. sarai (http://www.sarai.net) have an area in the CSDS (Centre for the Study of Developing Societies) building in Delhi. http://www.flickr.com/photos/aliak_com/225336499/ is a photo of outside of building to give you an idea they run multiple projects usually with some social benefit & media art practice, for example: - create an annual Sarai Reader / journal. the pdfs are available online & there's a printed version - iFellows - they have interns/researchers who propose studies they wish to undertake. Sarai provides a basic payment for them to do this study and at the end of the year there's a seminar where people present their works/papers/projects. they discuss how the projects are going on email lists & blogs, then meetup for the presentations. so generally people work independantly though I gathered that many knew each other so maybe they have meetups at sarai also (or they're uni friends? not sure) eg : http://ifellows2006.wordpress.com/ was the 2006 site for the projects - cybermohalla - this is based at the Sarai computer labs - they invite children from the streets to be involved in the projects, eg documenting their day with sarai cameras, recording devices etc. there's publications created in english and hindi (sometimes just hindi) - booklets, posters, books - these are available on the site too photo of lab space & computers : http://www.flickr.com/photos/aliak_com/225334930/ & cafe/bar in the lab area : http://www.flickr.com/photos/aliak_com/225334980) - media city project discusses and delves into urban issues & media mostyly in india. there's a publication for this too - general archiving. lots of this going on - there's different discussion mail lists for different topics eg urban life/study list (this one's really good if you're interested in urban/city life social issues in india), reader list (very busy & often goes offtopic), law, floss + some hindi-only lists - they also have different language projects & translations. some are only in hindi - film nights, events. they have workshops, film screenings, talks about book/film launches, guest speakers etc too http://www.flickr.com/search/?w=28565...@n00&q=sarai&m=text#page=0 & subsequent pages (12) have photos from ifellows 2006 & the raqs exhibition in delhi (their first! usually they exhibit overseas strangely enough...) a summary from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raqs_Media_Collective(29/01/2005) In 2001 Raqs co-founded Sarai at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies. The word sarai, or caravansarai, common to many Central Asian and Indian languages, refers to the shelters for travellers, sometimes large and extravagant, that traditionally dotted the cities and highways of that part of the world, facilitating travel and commerce but also enabling the exchange of stories and ideas. Serving the function, variously, of research centre, publishing house, cafe, conference centre, cinema, software laboratory and studio for digital art and design, Sarai is striking for its networked structure. Through its institutional partnerships, the research fellowships it provides each year, its residencies for visiting artists, researchers and programmers, multiple email lists, and many informal collaborations, Sarai has developed a large network that allows it to accumulate a vast range of knowledge and opinion from across the world and to make it available in many forms, places and languages. "Cybermohalla", the network of media laboratories established by Sarai in slum areas of Delhi, has led to a particularly impressive collaboration between members of Sarai and groups of young writers, artists and thinkers from these areas; while collaborations with programmers have led to "OPUS", an online experiment in artistic production inspired by the working practices of the free software movement. I think it's an amazing project and place of creativity and to help understand/document parts of indian life that we don't usually see on tv/news etc. I try to go when I'm in delhi. if you're ever in delhi and want something to do, look them up. they often collaborate with international artists too and have guests so get in touch with them.. :) hth kath -- http://www.aliak.com http://www.brisbanedancepartiesarchive.com 2009/10/5 trudy lane [email protected] > > > Also, could someone expand a bit further on how the Sarai model works? > > best, > // Trudy > > > > Trudy Lane Intercreate Research Centre > .- --- - . .- .-. --- .- .-. .- .-. .- -. --. .- - .- -. --. .- - .- > http://www.intercreate.org/ e: [email protected] m: +64 21 528 > 321 > > ------------------------------ _______________________________________________ Ada_list mailing list [email protected] http://list.waikato.ac.nz/mailman/listinfo/ada_list End of Ada_list Digest, Vol 80, Issue 33 **************************************** ********************************************************************** This electronic email and any files transmitted with it are intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed.
