Hi John + all

That's a great example - There's a lot to take in in those notes so I haven't really engaged with the content yet, but that seems like a really interesting and active way to participate in a conference remotely. Lots to work through here - feel free to muse on the experience further here if you like...

Also I really like your reference to live music and the local. Whatever the genre, a sense of a thriving local music scene is a touchstone of the deep local for me too. What other markers of the local are important here? (especially after working remotely on something)

+ I just got really excited about Etherpad, which I had never heard of, and now I see it's being closed by Google : (

Does anyone else have any great tools they use for remote and distributed collaboration?

And, yes, the time thing - I'm really sure the date given on the electrosmog programme page, and which I pasted in to my mail, is wrong, because Eric specifically told me 10am CET friday, which is 22:00 nz time friday. Also it's out of sequence in the programme if it's night time in dutch time!

We'll be posting a full programme of our own with translated times for events by early next week.

best
zita

I've just had the unusual experience of participating remotely in a conference where I was a primary note taker on a set of collaborative Etherpads.

The conference was TEDxNYED.

Hosted by Juliette LaMontagne.

Altogether, there are over 900 lines of notes linked here.

What I found was that New Zealand does have some very forward thinking people, as I was able to point to Ray Avery (New Zealand = 100% Pure Genius), Mark Osborne (first all open source high school) and Andrew Tridgell (an Australian teaching Free and Open Source Software with a free and open source course) while other participants in the conference noted the variety of open source projects based here (Koha, Moodle, ... ). Search the notes for links and details. Participating remotely certainly saved the environmental costs of flying me to New York! About 250 people were at the actual venue while over 500 watched on-line.

I'm hoping to bring some good ideas back from this "global" meeting and spread them around "locally" with this NING site and the local meetings it should support:

http://nzaisg.ning.com/

And I was just working within my university research group here last week to get a wiki started.

Frankly, the way I connect deeply locally is to listen to live music. After this day on the computer "in New York" I wandered over to the DeBrett Hotel Sunday night to hear the Caitlin Smith trio. She's a fabulous jazz singer and some of the songs she does are in Maori. Got busy and missed my usual Monday night "club night" at the Devonport Folk Club, but I'm heading to Womad this weekend ...

Does this help?
