I'm really glad you brought that up Nathan. First Peoples are surely
Deep Local, and I would really like us (ADA voices in the Electrosmog)
to be able to articulate that in a way that doesn't risk a kind of
essentialising from a Europe-based perspective....
Which also of course leads into the tangle of the periphery / centre
model inherent in this festival as well, which is there in thinking
about 'remoteness' (remote from where? + who?) + the local.
I like your sense of depths here - Underground and Surface.... how
deep is Deep Local?
Would love to have any contributions you can muster Nathan

Hi Zita, when I think Deep Local I think First Peoples and I think
Underground/Sub Culture, both tend to exist on some kind of periphery
all the while with some kind of surface presence and usually deliver
something unique to their communities. I would like to contribute to
this as one who knows something of these fields, however I may be over
committed on those dates already...during the daytime in NZ at least.

Dear ADA
The Electrosmog festival is happening in a little over a week - over
the weekend of March 19-21 (NZ time). The event is based in the
Netherlands, at De Balie centre for culture and Politics in Amsterdam,
and we're trying to coordinate some New Zealand participation in
debates that synch up with our timezone. Participation will be online
- streams, second life, chat channels etc, and I'll update on that
next week when it's clearer.
One of the most relevant of the discussion themes for us is 'Deep
Local', and it would be great to have some input from you guys about
it - ideas, examples, and thoughts all welcome...
below is the summary of the session as it is on the programme website
so far, but in practice there will be a strong emphasis on how remote
technologies may enable people (us?) to engage deeply with our local
(in its various dimensions), while remaining part of the world.
Obviously this is something I think we are pretty expert at here in
Aotearoa...
So, I'm really interested in any examples of yourselves or anyone else
you can think of (in NZ or anywhere in the world) who works the local
and the global in interesting ways. This can be much broader than
media arts practice.
I'm also interested in any ideas of what the 'local' is, and whether
travelling and participating in the 'world' makes it harder or easier
to be 'deep local'.
+ anything else this makes you think of!
I still don't really understand how this discussion will work within
electrosmog itself, and what scope for actually talking there will be,
so let me know if you want to try to be a talky part of it, otherwise
I'll try to distill some ideas and thoughts from the list into the
discussion myself.
Thanks!
zita
FRIDAY MARCH 19
Deep local and remote technologies
21.00 ? 23.00 CET (GMT+1)
[I actually think this is wrong - it's supposed to be Friday evening
nz time, but there is some schedule tweaking going on]
What does it mean to become Deep Local (again)? How can we reconnect
to the local, without giving up the rest of the world and without
burning up the last remaining carbon-hydrates?
Is going local a solution for the global energy and mobility crisis?
Can we reconnect the remote by means of the new networking and
communication technologies without ravaging the environment?
Can traditional life-styles be accommodated with global connectivity?
Or is a no-tech scenario the only option? Is that scenario still
possible?

Hi again ADA
Not to distract you from thinking about being deeply local, but this
is another Electrosmog project you might be interested in
participating in.
If you fancy some guerilla gardening and other urban nature
interventions you can register a wee project here:
http://uwac.anewfuckingwilderness.com
It's really focused on New York, Berlin, and London, but I reckon we
can add some wilderness of our own to the mix...

Urban Wilderness Action Center ? Jon Cohrs, Kai-Oi Jay Yung, and
Eyebeam
Online linkup between New York, London, Berlin, Amsterdam and
elsewhere will take place at 21.00 CET (GMT+1).
Follow live updates from each city on Twitter at #UWAClive from 15.00
? 24.00 CET (GMT+1).
The Urban Wilderness Action Center (UWAC) is a project initiated by
Eyebeam alum Jon Cohrs, in collaboration with the Eyebeam Student
Residents (New York), Eyebeam Education Coordinator Stephanie Pereira,
and UK-based artist Kai-Oi Jay Yung (UK). The UWAC project includes a
web platform uwac.anewfuckingwilderness.com and a day of action where
people from NYC, Berlin, and London will work together to design and
disseminate specific guerrilla gardening projects and related urban
interventions.
During the link up local results of the project will be presented and
discussed between the participating cities.
