Blurb: SCANZ 2022 panel at Balance/Unbalance 2022 Bogota Colombo Chaired by Nina Czegledy, this panel acknowledges and endorses indigenous leadership in regard to environmental practice and systems of knowledge, including Polynesian traditional navigation and fluid dynamics. Thanks to the engagement with Māori, Aotearoa New Zealand can join worldwide groups as leaders in bringing about a sustainable future, which is critical to future generations, especially as the West is languishing in building personal fortunes and doing practically nothing about fossil fuels. Resolving the climate crisis is not a science and technology problem. It is a cultural one. We must change the culture of the West and other countries away from exploitation for personal gain. Move world culture towards future generations and sustainable living with equitable share of resources. The panel commences with Maata Wharehoka a Kaitiaki (guardian) and Kaumatua (elder) of Parihaka, and then turns to a discussion of engaging indigenous practices, followed by an examination of traditional Polynesian navigation. This is complimented by a presentation from a Fluid Dynamics scientist at the University of Auckland. He has made a computer model of flow, which resembles kowhaiwhai.
