Wild shot in the dark as well,
There should be a Xorg log in /var/log
Grep for "(EE)"
Have tried to start X as root, to make sure it is not a privilege issue
Also on your repositories have you checked these two additional repos?
/etc/apk/repositories
my list for amd64:

I don't think apkfission have ppc32 only ppc64
You probably know better :)
