we don't really need a mailing list to get our first draft done; for
now we can just use plain old email CC.
Here's my first-shot pre-alpha outline to start the thing rolling:
1) we need a pre-amble that explains in a paragraph or two
- the survey title, something simple like "Canadian Linux Use"; each
month the survey will have a different "theme" and this header
describes the september theme of maybe "back to basics"
- you are invited to participate in the CLUE member survey because
you are a CLUE member; only CLUE members may vote. (it's going to
be tricky to get the survey server to only let in people with an
access code)
- your responses will be tabulated and the overall results released
to the mainstream media through canada newswire. this is their
chance to set the record straight on Linux in Canada.
- clue members will have free access to the entire report off the
member area of the linux.ca website; CLUE will charge others a
nominal fee, maybe $75 ..
( no I don't expect anyone will actually buy it, but it's an
acceptable practice and pays for our efforts to do all the
analysis by province, age, gender, occupation &c)
2) We need to whittle down the questions list to 4, at most two
sections of maybe 4, and we need to justify our choices to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] when we're ready.
We don't need to duplicate the Linux Counter, but we want to get a
handle on who our audience is and how they use Linux.
Here are (I think) all the questions posted in the IRC:
what distribution do you use? (check all that apply)
Have you seen more less or the same linux adoption in your business
in the past year? In the next year ahead?
is linux ready for the masses? (yes, no)
will Walmarts units sell?
is Linux being used in your schools? (infrastructure, curriculum)
has your LUG attendance been growing or not?
How can the cdn gov't support/promote/encourage linux?
where do you personally go for linux support questions? (web, lug,
usenet, friends)
how do people hear about your lug? (newspaper ads, word of mouth, website)
How many linux vendors are in your town? (can you buy a distro?)
What is linux good for? (how do you use Linux, check all that
apply, at home, at work, desktop, server, pda, development,
internet, research, electronics, art, music, digital video,
photography, webserver, other)
what do you want to see CLUE doing? (publish surveys, advocacy, pr,
activism, government lobby, networking, fostering LUGs, ...)
3) standard demographic questions used to parse the data
what province are you in?
your occupation (shall the survey include a hobbyist/professional questions?)
level of education
income range
age range: under 19, 19-24, 25-35, 35-50, over 50
gender
When we are done, the press release will only paint the image of the
typical user and any dramatic differences between different
demographic groups. it will be cocktail-party banter. the press
release links to our website and the website will contain the bar/pie
charts they can snip for their publications. the members-only area
can download the full report listing our sample sizes and the exact
data breakdowns. Non members are charged twice a membership-fee for
the report to urge them to become paying members ;) but they might get
the report printed on good stock with a cover and all that jazz, just
like the Jupiter reports (which cost an order of magnitude more)
A good guide for the report is the free StatsCanada Internet Use report
available from statscan.ca
