Umm...I wouldn't look too closely to Robert X. Cringely for a synopsis of the Linux/OSS movement. He was using Linux in the (generalistic) context that it was simply a weapon for IBM to weild. On OSS, he actually did a great job of obfuscating his own lack of understanding by arguing in abstract. A lot of us are quite concerned with competing with Microsoft, perhaps though not always in the capitalist sense of the word.
