I'll join the self-followup fun: I found the solution in a program called Smart Cache (scache.freshmeat.net) -- it does exactly as I'd requested, except that the performance I'm getting is deplorable (15-minutes to download a page of thumbnails, even with the gcj compiled version). Considering the application is over a year old and has seen many revisions, I must be doing something wrong in the config.
